A Brief History of
Berry Blvd. Presbyterian Church:
Berry Boulevard
Presbyterian Church was organized in 1905, originally meeting in the
older portion of the former Jacob Elementary School that faces Camden
Avenue. The church moved to its current location about 3 years later,
on Berry Boulevard near its intersection with Taylor
Boulevard. We are located about halfway
between the Watterson Expressway
(1-264) and world-famous Churchill Downs.
When it was founded,
we were affiliated with the Presbyterian Church of the United States,
or the Southern part of the largest Presbyterian body in the United
States. The Southern and Northern (United Presbyterian Church in the
United States of America) branches reunited in the early 1970's, and
as a result we became a part of the Presbyterian Church in the United
States of America (PCUSA), which is now headquartered here in
Louisville.
Over the years the
church, as well as its neighborhood, has seen many significant
changes, including the breakdown of inappropriate legal barriers such
as race and national origin
In the last 50 or so years, a number of programs at the church,
including Vacation Bible School, a youth group, a day care center, a
teen club, and aftercare for juvenile offenders, have enriched
countless lives. There is currently an application pending for
independent operation of another day care center in the back building.
